Re: Experienced people, what would you guess?
I have one further update. I think we can now definitively rule out the Hebden Francis and Mary, because I have found her maiden name was Rodwell, not McQuillan. One down, how many more to go???? Interestingly, I have found two Francis Hargraves and Mary McQuillans who grew up in the same towns (Bolton & Burslem), so could feasibly have been my ancestors, but no record that either pair ever got together. Best wishes.

Erich even a rule out is a step forward - can you remind me about the Macqullam middle name, did we guess it would be the mother's maiden name or were you told that by uour Mum
May not get to archives to day but hopefully by the end of the week.
Cheers

Re: Experienced people, what would you guess?
My grandfather's name on his death certificate is Ernest McQuillan Hargraves, and both his daughters (my mum & aunt) had/have McQuillan as their middle names. At his marriage to my grandmother, his parents are listed as Francis Hargraves (weaver) and Mary McWilliam, but his death certificate says Francis Hargraves (weaver) and Mary McQuillan. So that is pretty official though uncertain about spelling. You'd have to guess that 'McWilliam' was simply a scribal mis-spelling, but when searching back in UK I have tried both spellings, to no avail so far.

Re: Experienced people, what would you guess?
Hi Eric I have been having another serch for you and found that there was a Ernest Hargraves on the ship Leura which docked in Sydney 26/3/1915 Birth c1881as a AB seaman, Do you think that Ernest might have been a merchant seaman and his being away a lot led to the divorce..just a thought..
His marriage in 1924 shows a name as
Ernest Meo Hargraves..what does that mean,,Meo.. Do you have the marriage certificate..
In the electoral Rolls of 1933 and 1930 he is shown as a chef,,
Found a Olive McQuillan Hargraves in the 1937 Electoral Roll as a teacher in Broken Hill living at 232 Wolfram Street.
Have you managed to find a headstone for him as sometimes they tell a lot.Do you know what cemetary he is buried in..
Still looking
Mary

Mary thanks for your efforts, and your thoughts.

Thanks for your continued interest.
I don' think that could have been him because he was a chef, and in Gunnedah then, or shortly after. But the birth date is about right. People did change their job a bit back then, but unfortunately I don't think it fits. It was being away from Sydney working as a chef, not a sailor (I understand) that apparently led to his divorce.there was a Ernest Hargraves on the ship Leura which docked in Sydney 26/3/1915 Birth c1881as a AB seaman, Do you think that Ernest might have been a merchant seaman and his being away a lot led to the divorce
I don't have the marriage certificate - I have wondered whether it would show anything different from his first marriage and death certificates, which I have, but I didn't think so. But I don't know about the 'Meo' - where did you see that? Could it have been 'McQ'? That is strange. His marriage in 1924 shows a name as Ernest Meo Hargraves..what does that mean,,Meo.. Do you have the marriage certificate..
Yes, they are correct. In the electoral Rolls of 1933 and 1930 he is shown as a chef,,

He was (I presume) cremated, and there is no headstone or grave, just a little plaque in the garden at Woronora cemetery in Sydney, which, fortuitously, is just 5 minutes from where I live. Here it is at about half full size (but it doesn't tell us much):Have you managed to find a headstone for him as sometimes they tell a lot.Do you know what cemetary he is buried in.

Re: Experienced people, what would you guess?
Eric I think you must be right..Think that Meo was probably misstranscribed and should be Mcq...I dont know what is shown on Aussie Marriage certificates so cant say if getting the next one will be any good..I have no Aussie family prior to 1949 so have not had to order any certificates..
Have a look at the tree on Ancestry Dizzy has added and see if it gives any more info.
In my case there are many trees with parts of my family on it with lots of added people that are no connection at all so just be careful .I got so sick of all the mistakes and people adding my family to theirs..I made my tree private. I was happy to help genuine people but this add any name if it fits got to me.
